New 6 Week Series: Heal Trauma through Movement

Trauma Center Trauma Sensitive Yoga (TCTSY) sessions are now being offered in 1:1 and small, closed group formats (minimum of 4 participants). TCTSY can serve as a stand alone treatment for complex trauma or as an adjunct to other trauma therapy such as EMDR.

TCTSY sessions are designed to help participants connect with their body in the present moment. The focus is on the internal experience of the participant - what forms feel like instead of what they look like. By focusing on the felt sense of the body to inform choice-making, TCTSY provides opportunities for participants to restore their connection between mind and body and to cultivate a sense of agency that is often compromised as a result of surviving trauma.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is TCTSY different from a traditional yoga class?

A TCTSY class differs from a typical or public yoga class. For example, there are no adjustments or "assists". The facilitator typically stays on their mat throughout the class, practicing along with you.

TCTSY uses invitational language instead of directions or commands. This might sound like, "you're welcome to; if you like" or "...when you're ready."

Rather than focusing on alignment, the facilitator invites you to make choices based on how you are feeling. Sometimes trauma can make it difficult to feel in all or some parts of the body, and our vision is to create a safer place to have a present moment experience.

These are a few differences you may notice in a TCTSY class. These differences are rooted in attachment theory, trauma theory, and neuroscience.

Do I have to talk about my trauma to participate?

No. You will not be asked or expected to talk about your trauma as part of TCTSY. You can feel free to share some of your history as part of the intake process, however during a TCTSY session the focus is on the experience of being in your body.
